Desert Park

Thorny Devil

We arrived at the Alice Springs Desert Park just in time for the Birds of Prey display. The park is situated a short way out of Alice Springs with the west MacDonnell Ranges forming an impressive backdrop.  Every effort has been made to recreate the animals' natural environment and the audio explains the river, sand and woodland habitats. The nocturnal house was excellent and we got to see the endangered Bilby and the mala (small wallaby) which is sadly extinct in the wild. The kids also loved the thorny devil. We went to a presentation on Aboriginal survival in the desert which was really interesting. Doug, the guide, spoke earnestly about his people and his culture and was intriguing to listen to. We had some lunch at the cafe before exploring the rest of the park. We left at 3pm and went to visit Kerri a friend of mine from high school who has been living in Alice for 19 years. Rick caught up with Paul, who helped him make some further adjustments to the tow hitch.
