Farewell Queensland

We were on the road just after 8.30am - I think that's a record! We headed along the first section of rocky road which was the 40km to Riversleigh Fossil Field. We read the interpretive signs at the information shelter and walked the fossil trail. The remains of unique Australian prehistoric animals from the last 25 million years have been superbly preserved in the limestone outcrops. Turtles, fish, crocodiles, thunderbirds, marsupial lions, lizards and many types of kangaroos are among some of the fossils recovered here - most of which are in the Queensland museum. The site was World Heritage Listed in 1994 and is considered significant because of the extreme diversity and quality of preservation of the fossils. Another 100km of dirt road and we were on a minor sealed road before hitting the Barkly Highway. Now only 83km to the NT boarder and just over 1000km to Alice Springs. At Camooweal we filled up the car, the gas bottles and the water tank. After taking some photos at the boarder we drove another 200km before finding a roadside stop. The kids travelled really well in the car today - we even managed to get some school work. There were a few other vans around but no amenities - not even a 'don't look down toilet' which is what Cailtin & Cooper call the compost toilets. Sometimes it is better to go bush than a 'don't look down toilet'.
