El Questro

El Questro Homestead

Pigeon Hole Lookout

The boys were up at 5.30am to have another go at fishing. There was no build up this morning - it felt like 40 degrees at 6am. We had a swim in the pool and when the boys returned Rick cooked up some pancakes. We packed up and had to have another swim to cool off. We headed off to El Questro Wilderness Park which was a working cattle station first established in 1903. The English man, Will Burrell bought the million acre property in 1991 and developed it into a tourist destination. We booked a campsite at the Station Township and tried to find a shady site on the banks of the Pentecost River. There were no powered sites which meant no air-con! We booked a chopper flight at 3.00pm which gave us time for a quick dip in the river. We meet Jay our pilot and took off for a 30 minute tour of this amazingly beautiful and rugged countryside. We all really enjoyed it especially flying down the middle of Chamberlain Gorge. We felt it was too hot to take the kids on a walk so we decided to do some 4WD tracks. We went to Saddleback Ridge lookout and then Pigeon Hole Lookout where we watched the sunset. Back at the van we had some dinner and decided we couldn't go hard core like the Halls who have no air-con. It was so hot the water coming out of the cold tap from our tank was too hot to touch. Even the fridge was struggling to keep things cold. Having a cold shower before going to bed helped - Rick sculled a beer to help him sleep.
