Home Valley
We left the caravan park around 8am and picked up a few groceries in Kununurra. It was 54km to the turn off to Gibb River road. Stretching some 660km between Derby and Kununurra, the unpaved Gibb was constructed as a 'beef road' to move cattle to and from the area and is considered one of the great outback highways. We were only tackling the first 75km to Home Valley. It was corrugated and dusty but not too bad and surprisingly there were a few sealed sections. The scenery of the Cockburn Ranges was quite spectacular. I was a little nervous crossing the Pentecost River with the caravan but it held together. We arrived at Home Valley at around 10.30am and were greeted by Kirst and Gaz who had only arrived a few minutes earlier. We checked in and had to have a briefing with David, the camp manager. He took his job very seriously and laid down the rules! The kids had a play in the park until Coops retired injured. We set up and hit the pool - it was hot. We had lunch at the restaurant and went for another swim. It was lovely to catch up with some friends from home. Later in the afternoon the boys went fishing down the river bank but only succeeded in getting very muddy. We made the decision to go to El Questro the next day which is where the Halls had just spent the last week. Kirst and Gaz would go to Lake Argyle and we would catch up with them there.
