Geraldton

The Pink Lake

Point Moore Lighthouse

HMAS Sydney II Memorial

I woke up with a migraine so Rick did most of the pack up. We were heading further south but not too sure where we were going to end up. At Port Gregory we stopped to get a photo of the bizarre pink lake, Hutt Lagoon, which apparently is due to the naturally occurring beta carotene. Further south, we drove out to the coast to check out Coranation Beach camping reserve which is obviously a popular sailboarding and kite surfing spot. Everyone voted to continue on to Geraldton. What we didn't realize was that Geraldton was actually a regional city with a population of 37,000 people. We checked in at the Belair Tourist Park and after some toasties went to the nearby Point Moore Lighthouse. The 34 metre tall tower of prefabricated steel was brought out from England and has been operational since 1878. We drove to Separation Point Lookout and then spent sometime at the HMAS Sydney II Memorial which commemorates the loss of Australian sailors who met their fate in a World War II naval battle in 1941. The beautifully designed memorial features a silver dome of 645 seagulls to represent each sailor lost in the war time disaster. After 67 years of mystery, the wreck of German vessel, the Kormoran was found in March 2008 and a few days later the Sydney was found approximately 207km from Steep Point at a depth of approx 2,468 metres. It was time to do something kid friendly so we went to the newly developed foreshore precinct where the kids had fun in the great playground.
